  How To Learn To Read Music Fast

  The question I get asked the most concerning learning how to read music is “how can I learn fast?” For many people, not being able to read music is a big frustration and one which is preventing them from becoming the musician they know they can be. They want to learn how to read music, but particularly want to achieve this goal quickly because they want to get on with the fun stuff – playing and writing music. For many, this task is hindered by previous experiences of boring theory lessons in which they learn very little (except the belief that learning how to read music is very boring!). Other people have simply given up because they have not found a method of working that has helped them.

   

  The Secret to Fast Learning

  My message is simple – you can learn to read music fast and it can be fun! I believe this to be true because I see it on a daily basis – people learning how to read music and enjoying it! So what is the secret to fast and fun learning? Simple – make the learning practical. Too many people see learning to read sheet music as a separate subject – one that must be endured rather than enjoyed. They put their instrument to one side and focus on “doing theory”. They may do some music theory worksheets in an attempt to put their understanding into practice, but their way of approaching things is theoretical not practical. They soon get bored and frustrated because music is a language that needs to be played and heard, not just read. If you want to learn to read music fast and effectively then you must do so with your instrument close by so that you start to learn to “speak” the language you are learning. You should follow a series of lessons that are going to get you playing music as soon as possible through practical exercises and basic pieces.

   

  Get Started

  The underlying principles on which sheet music is written are not complicated. You need to know 3 basic things – the pitch of a note, when it is to be played and how long it lasts for. Add to this an understanding of the speed and volume of the music and you are well on your way. You will find that you grasp these concepts pretty quickly, as long as you are being practical about learning how to read sheet music.
