Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Chinese as a foreign or second language is the study of the Chinese languages by nonnative speakers. Increased interest in China from those outside has led to a corresponding interest in the study of Standard Chinese as a foreign language, the official languages of mainland China and Taiwan. However the teaching of Chinese both within and outside China is not a recent phenomenon. Westerners started learning different Chinese languages in the 16th century. Within China, Mandarin became the official language of China in 1924. Mandarin also became the official language of Taiwan after the Kuomintang took over control from Japan after World War II. There are several distinct subperiods within that long period of time. The term, in contrast to Middle Chinese and Modern Chinese, is usually used in historical Chinese phonology, which tries to reconstruct the way in which Old Chinese was pronounced. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Hundreds or thousands of Chinese family names have been historically used by Han Chinese and Sinicized Chinese ethnic groups in mainland China, Taiwan, and among overseas Chinese communities. In ancient times two types of surnames, family names (Chinese: pinyin: xng) and clan names (; pinyin: sh), existed. The colloquial expressions laobaixing, and bixng are used in Chinese to mean ordinary folks, the people, or commoners. Bijixng is also used to call the list of one hundred most common surnames. Chinese family names are patrilineal, passed from father to children. (In cases of adoption, the adoptee usually also takes the same surname.) Dreaming In Chinese: Mandarin Lessons In Life, Love, And Language

Dreaming In Chinese: Mandarin Lessons In Life, Love, And Language

    $18.99

Deborah Fallows has spent much of her life learning languages and traveling around the world. But nothing prepared her for the surprises of learning Mandarin, China’s most common language, or the intensity of living in Shanghai and Beijing. Over time, she realized that her struggles and triumphs in studying the language of her adopted home provided small clues to deciphering the behavior and habits of its people, and its culture’s conundrums. As her skill with Mandarin increased, bits of the language—a word, a phrase, an oddity of grammar—became windows into understanding romance, humor, protocol, relationships, and the overflowing humanity of modern China. Fallows learned, for example, that the abrupt, blunt way of speaking that Chinese people sometimes use isn’t rudeness, but is, in fact, a way to acknowledge and honor the closeness between two friends. She learned that English speakers’ trouble with hearing or saying tones—the variations in inflection that can change a word’s meaning—is matched by Chinese speakers’ inability not to hear tones, or to even take a guess at understanding what might have been meant when foreigners misuse them. In sharing what she discovered about Mandarin, and how those discoveries helped her understand a culture that had at first seemed impenetrable, Deborah Fallows’s Dreaming in Chinese opens up China to Westerners more completely, perhaps, than it has ever been before. A linguist and China expert learns that to understand China, first you must understand its language.

Chinese classic texts or Chinese canonical texts refer to the preQin Chinese texts, especially the Confucian Four Books and Five Classics . All of these preQin text were written in classical Chinese. They can be referred to as jing . More broadly speaking, Chinese classic texts may refer to texts, be they written in vernacular Chinese or in classical Chinese, that existed before 1912, when the last imperial Chinese dynasty, the Qing Dynasty, fell. These can include shi, zi and ji as well as jing. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Four Books and Five Classics, Chinese classic texts chosen by Song dynasty NeoConfucianist Zhu Xi, were the subject of mandatory study by those Confucian scholars who wished to become government officials. Any political discussion was full of references to this background, and one could not be one of the literati, or even a military officer, without knowing them. Generally, children first studied the Chinese characters with rote memorization of the Three Character Classic and Hundred Family Surnames, then went on to memorize the other classics, in order to ascend in the social hierarchy. Romanization of Chinese

    $89.22

The romanization of Chinese is the use of the Latin alphabet to write Chinese. Since Chinese is a tonal language with a logographic script, its characters do not represent phonemes directly. There have been many systems of romanization throughout history. Linguist Daniel Kane recalls, It used to be said that sinologists had to be like musicians, who might compose in one key and readily transcribe into other keys. However, Hanyu Pinyin has become the international standard since 1982. Other wellknown systems include Wade Giles and Yale Romanization. There are many uses for Chinese romanization systems. They serve as a useful tool for foreign learners of Chinese by indicating the pronunciation of unfamiliar characters. It can also be helpful for clarifying pronunciationMandarin pronunciation is an issue for some speakers of other mutually unintelligible Chinese languages who do not speak Mandarin fluently. Standard keyboards such as QWERTY are designed for the Latin alphabet, often making the input of Chinese characters into computers difficult. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A Chinese Australian is an Australian of Chinese heritage. In the 2006 Australian Census, 669,890 Australian residents identified themselves as having Chinese ancestry, either alone or with another ancestry. The early history of Chinese Australians had involved significant immigration from villages of the Pearl River Delta in Southern China. Less well known are the kind of society Chinese Australians came from, the families they left behind and what their intentions were in coming. Many Chinese were lured to Australia by the gold rush. (Since the mid19th century, Australia was dubbed the New Gold Mountain after the Gold Mountain of California in North America.) They sent money to their families in the villages, and regularly visited their families and retired to the village after many years, working as a market gardener, shopkeeper or cabinet maker. As with many overseas Chinese groups the world over, early Chinese immigrants to Australia established Chinatowns in several major cities, such as Sydney (Chinatown, Sydney), Brisbane (Chinatown, Brisbane) and Melbourne (Chinatown, Melbourne). Within this community, the term Chinese American is often broadly defined to include not only immigrants from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and their descendants but also immigrants and descendants of Overseas Chinese people who migrated to the United States from places as diverse as Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Burma, and the Philippines. The first Chinese immigrants arrived in 1820 according to U.S. government records. Fewer than 1,000 men are known to have arrived before the 1848 California Gold Rush which drew the first significant number of laborers from China who mined for gold and performed menial labor. There were 25,000 immigrants by 1852, and 105,465 by 1880, most of whom lived on the West Coast. Most of the early immigrants were young males with low educational levels from the Guangdong province. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The practice of drinking tea has had a long history in China, having originated from there. The Chinese drink tea during many parts of the day such as at meals for good health or simply for pleasure. Although tea originates from China, Chinese tea generally represent tea leaves which have been processed using methods inherited from ancient China. According to popular legend, tea was discovered by Chinese Emperor Shennong in 2737 BCE when a leaf from a Camellia sinensis tree fell into water the emperor was boiling. Tea is deeply woven into the history and culture of China. The beverage is considered one of the seven necessities of Chinese life, along with firewood, rice, oil, salt, sauce and vinegar. Some writers classify tea into four categories, white, green, oolong and black. Others add categories for red, scented and compressed teas. All of these come from varieties of the Camellia sinensis plant. Chinese flower tea while popular, is not a true tea. Most Chinese tea is consumed in China and is not exported. Chinese Windmill

    $19.5

A member of the group of Chinese poets known as They, Li Sen is wellknown in China. Chinese Windmill is a collection of thirtythree of his recent poems, presented in Chinese with facing English translations. Lis poems are profoundly influenced by American poetry, and he owes much of his inspiration to the poetics of Walt Whitman, Wallace Stevens, Robert Frost, and William Carlos Williams. In his poetry, he undertakes to build a balance between metaphysics and deconstruction. His poems start with things and lead poetically to metaphysical questioning; at the same time, they deconstruct culture, knowledge, and language. In the context of such poetics, his poems pay attention to the existence of contemporary Chinese people, casting an intellectually critical eye on contemporary life. His poems reject degradation through criticism and salvation, and look for traces of life in the process of construction and deconstruction. These impressive lines bespeak the anguish shouldered by an intellectual and serve as contemporary lyrics that seek new life in suffering. Chinese Law

    Chinese Law

    $79.66

Chinese law is one of the oldest legal traditions in the world. In the 20th and 21st century, law in China has been a complex mix of traditional Chinese approaches and Western influences. For most of the history of China, its legal system has been based on the Confucian philosophy of social control through moral education, as well as the Legalist emphasis on codified law and criminal sanction. Following the Revolution of 1911, the Republic of China adopted a largely Westernstyle legal code in the civil law tradition (specifically Germaninfluenced). The establishment of the Peoples Republic of China in 1949 brought with it a more Sovietinfluenced system of socialist law. However, earlier traditions from Chinese history have retained their influence, even to the present. Law in the Peoples Republic of China is currently undergoing gradual reform, as many elements inside and outside the country emphasize the need to strengthen the rule of law in China, and international trade and globalization spur transformations in various areas of Chinese domestic law. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Chinese Palaces are some of the most elaborate structures that have ever been constructed. There is a long history of imperial rule in China, and the palaces were the sites where the royal court resided, as well as many government bureaucrats and functionaries. The English word palace is used to translate the Chinese word (pronounced gng in Mandarin). This character represents two rooms connected (), under a roof (). Originally the character applied to any residence or mansion, but starting with the Qin Dynasty (3rd century Be it was used only for the residence of the emperor and members of the imperial family. Chinese palaces are different from postRenaissance European palaces because they do not consist of a single building only. Instead, Chinese palaces are huge spaces surrounded by one or more walls and moats and containing large separated halls ( din) for ceremonies and official business, as well as smaller buildings, temples, towers, residences, galleries, courtyards, gardens, and outbuildings, more like the Roman or Carolingian palatium. This book is an exploration of how Chinese communites in the United States and Germany create and disseminate a sense of diasporic Chinese identity. It not only compares the local conditions of the Chinese communities in the two locations, but also moves to a global dimension to track the Chinese transnational imaginary. Van Ziegert analyzes three strategies that overseas Chinese use to articulate their identities as diasporic subjects: being more American/Germanbeing more Chinesehybridizing and commodifying Chinese culture through transcultural performances. These three strategies are not mutually exclusive and they often intersect and supplement each other in unexpected ways. The author also analyzes how the everyday lives of overseas Chinese connect with global and local factors, and how these experiences contribute to the formation of a global Chinese identity. ProDrop Language

    ProDrop Language

    $82.85

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A prodrop language (from pronoundropping ) is a language in which certain classes of pronouns may be omitted when they are in some sense pragmatically inferable (the precise conditions vary from language to language, and can be quite intricate). The phenomenon of pronoundropping is also commonly referred to in linguistics as zero or null anaphora. In everyday speech there are often instances when who or what is being referred to can be inferred from context. Proponents of the term prodrop take the view that pronouns which in other languages would have those referents can be omitted, or be phonologically null. Among major languages, one which might be called a prodrop language is Japanese (featuring pronoun deletion not only for subjects, but for practically all grammatical contexts). Chinese, Slavic languages, and American Sign Language also exhibit frequent prodrop features. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. This paper is written preliminarily for Western people who want to know how to do business with Chinese. The paper puts much emphasis on comparing the different cultures. Therefore it is also interesting for Chinese who want to know more about the differences between their and Western culture. A mutual understanding of the different cultures can help to reduce misunderstandings and communicate more effectively. First of all, it is important to give a brief overview of the country. To get a better understanding of the information, China will be compared with the European Union (EU). Chapter 3 will give an overview of Chinese culture in general using Hofstedes and Halls approach to describe culture. It is important to understand Chinese culture in general to understand Chinese business culture. Then chapter 4 deals with some important aspects of Chinese Business culture. Besides that learning the Chinese language can be a complementary part of getting a better understanding of Chinese business culture and Chinese culture in general. This paper does not deal with studying the Chinese language. If the business language in your special case is not English, it is advised to use an interpreter unless you speak Chinese fluently. Chinese New Zealanders are the fifth largest ethnic group in New Zealand. The first records of ethnic Chinese in New Zealand were the immigrants from Guangdong Province, who arrived during the 1860s goldrush era. Due to this historical influx, there is still a distinct Chinese community in the Southern city of Dunedin, whose current update] mayor Peter Chin is of Chinese descent. However, most Chinese New Zealanders live in the North Island, and are of more recent migrant heritage. Chinese New Zealanders may broadly be defined into two categories; the earlier generation, and recent or temporary migrants that have arrived since the 1980s.
