Mandarin Language

When will Mandarin become the international language of the world?
When are people predicting that Mandarin will be the language two foreigners speak with each other to communicate, rather than now with English?
I’m asking this because If Mandarin becomes that language, then non-English countries won’t want English teachers and I really want to teach English in Asia
Although there are millions and millions of people that Speak Mandarin they are concentrated in practically one country, China. I do not see mandarin becoming “the international language” because it is hardly used out of China. Even when chinesse people do business they use translatros or learn english or the language of their business parthners.

The Mandarin VP
$285.17
The Mandarin VP deals with a number of constructions in Mandarin Chinese which involve the main verb and the material following it, like the object NPs, resultative phrases, durative expressions and other elements. The basis claim defended in this book is that all elements that follow the main verb in a Mandarin sentence form one single constituent which functions as the complement of the verb. The Mandarin VP offers new and original analyses of such hot issues as resultative constructions, the baconstruction and verble. In addition, the conclusions drawn from the research into Mandarin syntax are discussed in more general theoretic terms, which leads to original proposals regarding the internal makeup of accomplishments and the status of Theta Theory. The research reported on in this book was concluded within the bounds of mainstream generative theorizing. The Mandarin VP is of interest to all syntacticians, especially those interested in Chinese. Dreaming In Chinese: Mandarin Lessons In Life, Love, And Language
$18.99
Deborah Fallows has spent much of her life learning languages and traveling around the world. But nothing prepared her for the surprises of learning Mandarin, China’s most common language, or the intensity of living in Shanghai and Beijing. Over time, she realized that her struggles and triumphs in studying the language of her adopted home provided small clues to deciphering the behavior and habits of its people, and its culture’s conundrums. As her skill with Mandarin increased, bits of the language—a word, a phrase, an oddity of grammar—became windows into understanding romance, humor, protocol, relationships, and the overflowing humanity of modern China. Fallows learned, for example, that the abrupt, blunt way of speaking that Chinese people sometimes use isn’t rudeness, but is, in fact, a way to acknowledge and honor the closeness between two friends. She learned that English speakers’ trouble with hearing or saying tones—the variations in inflection that can change a word’s meaning—is matched by Chinese speakers’ inability not to hear tones, or to even take a guess at understanding what might have been meant when foreigners misuse them. In sharing what she discovered about Mandarin, and how those discoveries helped her understand a culture that had at first seemed impenetrable, Deborah Fallows’s Dreaming in Chinese opens up China to Westerners more completely, perhaps, than it has ever been before. A linguist and China expert learns that to understand China, first you must understand its language.

Mandarin Visual Speech Information.
$115.71
While the auditoryonly aspects of Mandarin speech are heavilyresearched and wellknown in the field, this dissertation addresses its lesserknown aspects: The visual and audiovisual perception of Mandarin segmental information and lexicaltone information. Chapter II of this dissertation focuses on the audiovisual perception of Mandarin segmental information. It strongly suggests that Mandarin speakers and English speakers are similar in their manner of audiovisual speech processing, despite differences in information across languages. It also strongly argues, along with previous research, that the McGurkeffect paradigm (although valuable in its own right) does not address the nature of information processing. Chapter III of this dissertation focuses on the visual perception of Mandarin segmental information. The synthetic visual speech of a computeranimated talking head was evaluated and subsequently improved. Also, the basic (or minimum ) units of Mandarin visual speech were determined for Mandarin initialconsonants and singlevowel endings. Although it may not be possible to completely standardize visual speech, at least some degree of standardization was achieved: The degrees of perceptual closeness among the items or categories were established. Chapter IV and Chapter V of this dissertation focus on the visual and audiovisual perception of Mandarin lexical tones. Under ideal conditions, there is visual tonal information, and it can influence toneidentification in the presence of ambiguous auditory tones. However, for naive or untrained participants, visual tonal information only had a slight (albeit statisticallysignificant) influence on toneidentification, and visual tones had no significant influences in the presence of clear auditory tones. Acoustical Studies of Mandarin Vowels and Tones
$43.75
Originally published in 1976, the sixth book in the Princeton Cambridge Studies in Chinese Linguistics series was one of the first in any language to apply the techniques of acoustic phonetics to Mandarin Chinese. The present volume describes the acoustic cues for the perception of nine vowels and four tones (that is, patterns of voice pitch that serve to distinguish words). The description is based on an analysis of the speech of one male speaker of the Peking dialect, the results of which were used to determine the dimensions of a set of synthetic vowels and tones. In a series of perception tests these synthetic speech samples were presented to a group of twelve Mandarin speakers for identification with Mandarin characters. The series represents a systematic and highly detailed linguistic analysis of the Chinese languages. It provides a sophisticated workingtool and a comprehensive library of reference. Modeling Temporal Progression in Mandarin Chinese
$189.58
This book discusses how to determine temporal relations between sentences with aspect markers in a discourse in Mandarin Chinese. The author examines the four aspect markers in Mandarin Chinese: the progressive zai, the durative zhe, the perfective le and the experiential guo. Following Segmented Discourse Representation Theory, which proposes that temporal relations are determined by rhetorical relations, the author argues that, based on its aspectual semantics, an aspect marker indirectly influences temporal relations in two ways: First, it specifies a defeasible rhetorical relation, which in turn determines a temporal relation; second, it sets up a temporal constraint to be obeyed by the temporal relations specifid by the rhetorical relations which connect the sentences together. The Effects of Speaking Rate on Mandarin Tones.
$115.71
This study examined the acoustic changes of speaking rate on Mandarin tones. 8 native Mandarin speakers produced 17 Chinese words with four tones at slow, normal and fast speaking rate. Acoustic parameters, such as consonant and vowel duration, F0 at onset and offset of vowels and the first, second and third formant frequencies were examined. The DeltaF0 and the Turning Point of Tones 2 and 3 were also examined. Results showed significant changes in duration in both consonant and vowels as a function of speaking rate. The findings showed that the vowel duration of a shorter tone, such as tone 4 increases relatively more than a longer tone, such as tone 3 at a slower speaking rate. Results also found that the values of F0 at vowel onset and offset varied as a function of speaking rate. Formant frequency values showed little change when all the stimuli were examined. When the front and back vowels were analyzed separately, F2 values did show significant variations when speaking rate changed. F2 values of front vowels decreased and F2 values of back vowels increased, with an increase in speaking rate. In terms of DeltaF0 and TP of Tones 2 and 3, the results showed changes across speaking rate, with a decrease in DeltaF0 and an earlier TP as speaking rate increases. These effects were most prominent for Tone 3. These findings are interpreted in terms of how tones are implemented under different speaking rates in production. Author: Stockton, Yun H. Chinese as a Foreign Language
$76.47
Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Chinese as a foreign or second language is the study of the Chinese languages by nonnative speakers. Increased interest in China from those outside has led to a corresponding interest in the study of Standard Chinese as a foreign language, the official languages of mainland China and Taiwan. However the teaching of Chinese both within and outside China is not a recent phenomenon. Westerners started learning different Chinese languages in the 16th century. Within China, Mandarin became the official language of China in 1924. Mandarin also became the official language of Taiwan after the Kuomintang took over control from Japan after World War II. Early Signs of Language Shifting
$167.53
This book explores the early signs of language shifting among younger Chinese immigrants in New Zealand. Research shows that language shift happens within three generations with minority immigrants (Fishman, 1991). Yet, less attention has been paid to how this process has actually happened. This book examines parental language attitudes and beliefs, family language choice, parental response strategy and the effect of those strategies. It has been found that, within 28 months after their arrival, the amount of Mandarin Chinese used in these families is decreasing sharply; In terms of daily communication function, English is taking over Mandarin Chinese; Parental interactive strategy also tends to be moving towards bilingual or even English. These are important signs of language shifting. Actions need to be taken for mother tongue maintenance. The Secret Mandarin
$10.99
A disgraced woman. A faraway land. A forbidden love An unforgettable tale set in Victorian London and 1840s China from a shining, young historical talent. Desperate to shield her from scandal, Mary’s brother-in-law, the ambitious botanist Robert Fortune, forces her to accompany him on a mission to China to steal tea plants for the East India Company. But Robert conceals his secret motives – to spy for the British forces, newly victorious in the recent Opium War. His task is both difficult and dangerous – the British are still regarded as enemies by the Chinese and exporting tea bushes carries the death sentence. In these harsh conditions Mary grieves for her London life and the baby she has been forced to leave behind, while her fury at Robert intensifies. As their quest becomes increasingly treacherous, Robert and Mary disguise themselves as a mandarin and man-servant. Thousands of miles from everything familiar, Mary revels in her new freedom and the Chinese way of life – and when danger strikes, finds unexpected reserves of courage. The Secret Mandarin is an unforgettable story of love, fortitude and recklessness – of a strong woman determined to make it in a man’s world and a man who will stop at nothing to fulfil his desires.
