What are some interesting day excursions in Beijing and Shanghai?
What are some interesting day excursions in Beijing and Shanghai?
I’m going on a tour and have a full day of leisure in each city. I’m into ancient history, art, Chinese Culture, beautiful places…The tour is already going to the Great Wall, Ming tombs, the bund. When i was in Shanghai we went to water city of Zhouzhuang, which was really nice. However we went in “golden week” and it was absolutely packed. If you are near the bund, then there is a seven story book shop, located nearby, well worth a look simply for the ‘aw’ factor. Shanghai is very touristy, and more ‘westernised’ then the rest of China.
When we were in Beijing we went to the summer palace, which is well worth the visit. The Forbidden City needs a whole day to completely appreciate. And the Temple of Heaven is very cool, with a “whispering wall”. But if you are doing the great wall you may need a day to recover. If so, just explore. Its nice to take a day off and just wonder around. Go and get lost in the hutongs, have a ride in a rickshaw, just make sure you tip
If you are going to buy things, MAKE SURE YOU HAGGLE!! take off atleast 3 quarters of the price, if they wont haggle, then pretend to walk away and you will definitely get your asking price.
Have fun, keep safe and enjoy what time you have there

Beijing Blur
$18.59
‘I was in China and I wanted something more Chinese than Chinese: bigger, better, badder, redder. China held the promise of dragons’ heads, acrobatics, mahjong and brothels. I was also expecting a display of kitsch, old-school communism: messages daubed on walls, Mao sculptures propped up against cash registers, crumbling socialist monoliths… But when my eyes hit Beijing for the first time, all this fell away.’ When Sydney journalist James West lands a job at a state-run radio station in Beijing, he imagines he knows a lot about China. Then he arrives, and finds himself at a rave, dancing on the Great Wall. But is one night of hedonism on China’s most well-known landmark an accurate reflection of the ‘real Beijing’? Or an anomaly in an otherwise tightly controlled culture, still dealing with the aftershocks of the Cultural Revolution and Tiananmen Square? To find answers, he talks to the next generation about their experiences and frustrations, about politics and about the China they will create for themselves. Against a backdrop of the changing seasons in Beijing, a city he grows to love, he enters a brave new world of bloggers, punk-rock dens and underground queer culture. An intimate account of one young Australian’s year abroad, Beijing Blur is also the story of modern China – a nation poised at one of the great turns of the global historical tide.
The Beijing Consensus
$25.19
Beijing presents a clear and gathering threat to Washington but not for the reasons you think. China’s challenge to the West stems from its transformative brand of capitalism and an entirely different conception of the international community. Taking us on a whirlwind tour of China in the world from dictators in Africa to oligarchs in Southeast Asia to South American strongmen Halper demonstrates that China’s illiberal vision is rapidly replacing that of the so-called Washington Consensus. Instead of promoting democracy through economic aid, as does the West, China offers no-strings-attached gifts and loans, a policy designed to build a new Beijing Consensus. The autonomy China offers, together with the appeal of its illiberal capitalism, have become the dual engines for the diffusion of power away from the West. The Beijing Consensus is the one book to read to understand this new Great Game in all its complexity.

The Beijing Of Possibilities
$9.89
Blending elements of the surreal with carefully observed details of life in present-day Beijing Jonathan Tel’s short stories offer a rich and highly entertaining guide to the city and its many and varied inhabitants-from a modern-day Monkey King to an equally contemporary indentured servant from a boy tasting his first cotton candy to a Ming Dynasty princess posting her first online profile. The stories offer a vicarious tour through modern Beijing and a long view of Chinese history. The reader flies through the book chuckling over one character’s trickery moved by another’s plight and horrified at another’s unwitting actions until reaching the culminating novella which brings the whole book and its take on China back to the Western reader with a stunning immediacy. Americans’ newly minted fascination with China stoked by the 2008 Olympics can find both intellectual and artistic satisfaction in this collection. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Beijing Subway
$93.99
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Beijing Subway is a rapid transit rail network that serves the urban and suburban districts of Beijing municipality. The subways first line opened in 1971, and the network now has 9 lines, 147 stations and 228 km of tracks in operation and delivers over 4 million rides per day. It is the oldest and busiest subway in mainland China, and the second longest after the Shanghai Metro. Since the newest line, Line 4, entered operation on September 28, 2009, daily ridership has exceeded 5 million. The existing network still cannot adequately meet the citys mass transit needs and is undergoing rapid expansion. Overall, plans call for 19 lines and 561 km of tracks in operation by 2015. The Chinese governments 4 trillion economic stimulus package has accelerated subway construction. In addition to 9 lines already under construction, work is set to begin on 3 new lines in 2009, and the entire network will double in size to 420 km by 2012.
